Closer Cooperation for Chinese and UK Universities
Universities in China and the United Kingdom are expected to shortly be cooperating more closely after an agreement was signed between two groups of elite institutions.
The agreement was made between the Russell Group, which is an association of British universities including Cambridge and Oxford, and Group-China 9, who represent prestigious establishments including Nanjing, Peking and Shanghai Jiao Tong universities.
It calls for the strengthening of current ties, as well as sharing ideas, information and learning between the groups.
The news of the agreement came in Shanghai at the culmination of the 'Russell Group-China 9 Dialogue', which had seen Russell Group representatives travel to China for discussions with their Chinese counterparts.
Although not directly related to the announcement, we recently saw evidence of growing ties between international scholars, when a group of student ambassadors came to talk to us.
The ambassadors, from the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGH) - one of the oldest charitable organizations in Hong Kong - visited London to learn more about the British capital, and about the lives of the Chinese people who live in the UK.
Visits included the Chinese Embassy, Houses of Parliament, and the University of Cambridge and University College London, alongside a trip to a musical.
They also spent time trying to understand the life of Chinese people living abroad and learn about Chinese culture from a different perspective. The student ambassadors visited local Chinese community organization to hear about the past experiences of Chinese immigrants, how they have integrated into British society and passed on Chinese culture to the next generation.
