Australian National University (ANU) students Jackson Carey and Hugh Evans will be spending summer on the road when they ride from
Melbourne to Cairns to raise money for cancer research.
The two join a team of 25 who will be cycling more than 4,000km over 45 days, passing through towns and cities that make up 65 per cent of the Australian population.The cyclists are raising money for a health promotion charity known as Steer North. So far $100,000 has been
raised. "I'm excited to see parts of Australia that I haven't seen. I'm also excited to ride through my hometown of Newcastle, so that will be fun," says 21-year-old Jackson Carey, who is studying a Bachelor of Commerce and Laws (honours).
"Christmas on the road will be different. We're doing a big secret santa. "I've never gone north of Brisbane so it will be interesting to see that side."
20-year-old Hugh Evans says the ride will be a different way to spend summer. "We get three months off so it's a long time - and so it will be doing something rewarding and something completely different to what I've been doing during the semester.
"It's that physical challenge but probably also more of a mental challenge which is what I'm looking forward to."
The ride begins in Melbourne on 3 December, and wraps up in Cairns on 16 January 2017.
