Australian National University 70th year celebrations!

2016-07-18

The Australian National University (ANU) Celebrates its 70th anniversary!

2016 is turning out to be a year of celebrations at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. Earlier this month, ANU held a conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the ADB also known as the Australian Dictionary of Biography.

The Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB), has a central role in telling the stories of Australia's great characters, both famous, infamous and lesser-known personalities from history. Special guests at the conference included former cabinet minister Barry Jones, who published the first Australian Dictionary of World Biography in 2004. The conference also featured talks from the editors of the Biographies of the UK, the US, Scotland and Ireland.

Another big event held at ANU earlier this month was the popular Canberra Intervarsity Choral Festival which is an annual music event in Australia. Every year since 1950, members of university choirs from around Australia have gathered together in a host city such as Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra or Perth etc. For intensive rehearsals, workshops, and fun, culminating in one or more public performances. This years IVF celebrated its 67th anniversary at ANU.

Way back in early 1946, a number of prominent Australian academics including the honourable H.C. Coombs discussed the possibility of setting up a new national university.  On August 1st, 1946 the Bill establishing The Australian National University was passed by Australia's Federal Parliament, and 70 years on ANU has become a highly respected and world famous educational institution.

On August 1st, 2016 The Australian National University will celebrate its 70th anniversary by holding a number of special anniversary activities at its main campus in Canberra. For more information about the ANU 70 celebrations visit its official website at:
