The BIT Econopower Team Takes Silver!

2016-06-13

The Beijing Institute of Technolgy (BIT) Econopower Team

Recently a team of students from the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) took part in the prestigious 2016 ASIA Shell Eco-marathon. The international event was held in Manila, capital of the Philippines where 17 teams from many countries and regions participated in the competition.

The Eco-marathon originated in the US in 1939, and at that time, scientists in the Shell Laboratory were interested in organising a challenge where contestants were given one gallon of gasoline for their car, and the winner was the car which went the furthest distance. Eventually this led to a full - scale car event which came to Asia for the first time in 2010.

The Shell Eco-marathon is an innovative contest for college students, and teams are expected to design and build their own car. The Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) Econopower Team designed and built a 100% electric powered vehicle which performed extremely well. The car which is called 'Econopower' had to meet high logistics requirements, which meant a lot of components had to be dismantled in advance in China and transported by sea to the Philippines where it was reassembled by the 14 member BIT team.

The BIT Econopower Car performed very well at the event and was eventually awarded the penultimate prize,of the Silver Medal. In fact the Econopower Car set a distance record of 442Km/kwh and the BIT Team was overjoyed by the success of their car!
